The Best Sheets for Children's Beds
Choose crisp cotton percale for a child's bed. It sleeps cooler than sateen, launders hard without complaint, and its matte surface holds a fine embroidered outline sharply. Look for 100% cotton with no synthetic blends, ideally certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, a fitted sheet that fits the mattress properly, and a weave built for frequent washing. All four of our children's designs are percale for exactly these reasons.
Why percale, not sateen
Children sleep warm and wash often. Percale answers both. Its one over one weave leaves more space between threads, so air moves through it and the bed stays cooler. That same tight, simple weave takes weekly laundering for years and softens as it ages rather than wearing thin. Sateen is lovely on an adult bed, but its sheen softens a small motif and it holds a little more warmth than a child needs.
What to avoid
Polyester and cotton-poly blends trap heat and hold odours. Chemical wrinkle-resistant finishes sit on the fibre and are the opposite of what you want against young skin. A deep, floppy fitted sheet that will not stay on the mattress is a nightly annoyance. A 100% cotton set in the right size solves all three.
A note on designs children actually keep
The advantage of hand embroidery on a child's bed is that there is something to find in it. The dogs in Pups at the Park are arranged differently in every set.
